Supported and Accessible Playgroups

Nurturing Children...Strengthening Families...Building Communities

What is a Supported Playgroup?

Supported Playgroups aim to empower families to support young children's development through provision and participation in a variety of developmentally appropriate play experiences and activities. Supported Playgroups provide opportunities for parents and children to enhance their relationship in a supportive environment, increase their skills and confidence, and to develop valuable social and family support networks.

Supported Playgroups are facilitated by a Coordinator. They usually meet once a week for two hours. The Supported Playgroup Coordinator works with families attending the playgroup to help them develop the skills to participate in and eventually to run the playgroup independently.

About Supported Playgroups

Each Supported Playgroup targets families from one of more of the following groups within the community:

  • Families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

  • Indigenous families

  • Families with mental health or disability issues (either the parent or child)

  • Teenage and young parent families

  • Families who are socially isolated or disadvantaged

Supported Playgroups are funded by the Australian Government, through the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, as part of the Expansion of Playgroups initiative and Accessible Playgroups are funded by the Department of Education.
